The Trad Hat – knitting pattern using traditional aran cables

The Trad Hat is based on traditional Aran patterns and uses very simple cables on a reverse stocking stitch background with moss stitch infill.

The pattern is written in three sizes and both charts and written instructions are provided. The charts or written instructions for each size are on separate pages, which not only makes reading them super-easy, but allows you to print only the page you need, rather than the whole pattern.

The pattern is written in three sizes:
Small – to fit head approx. 46cm/18½ inches
Medium – to fit head approx. 51cm/20½ inches
Large – to fit head approx. 56cm/22½ inches
Hat has approx. 5cm / 2 inches negative ease.

Yarn requirements:
Approx. 125 (160, 210)m / 135 (175, 230) yds of aran weight yarn

Optional: approx. 3m, (3½ yds) of contrasting yarn for brim.

The single colour hat pictured is made from Drops Alaska, 100% wool, the hat with the contrast brim from Patons Extrafine Merino Aran. The pattern is suitable for any aran weight yarn. A high wool content is recommended for warmth. Solid or semisolid colours are recommended as multi-coloured yarns tend to hide the cable patterns.

Other supplies:
4.5mm (UK 7, US 7) and 5mm (UK 6, US 9) DPNs or circular needles.

  • DPNs: Minimum 20cm (8 inches) in length are recommended. Set of 5 is recommended.
  • Circular needles: use either a 40cm (16”) needle for regular circular knitting or 120cm (47”) for magic loop method. You may also need DPNs for the crown due to the small number of stitches.
